Don't be fooled by its name, Peyriac-de-Mer is not a seaside village. The Mediterranean is close by as the crow flies!) but the water around the village is that of the lagoon. It is a calm, soothing spot inhabited by pink flamingos and wild ducks all year round.
You’ll fall in love with the pretty village built around a charming square where you can sit in the sunshine outside restaurants and cafés, just a stone's throw from the town hall and the church!
The area around the town has some great vineyards and wineries, many of which are organic.
Go through the old salt flats over the photogenic wooden pontoons to the Doul lagoon where you can take a dip, should the fancy take you (the water is very salty!).
Stay on the paths, and continue up the hill of Mour to enjoy an incredible 360° view of the lagoons, sea and mountains.
It is true to say that wines that grow with their feet close to the lagoons will be quite different from those whose grapes are enriched by the soil of the Fontfroide Massif. So much diversity in a single municipality, it must pique your curiosity?
Remember to visit the estates and châteaux on either side to experience it for yourself!
This pretty store is open all year round and is close to the visitors' car park on the edge of the lagoon. Marthe will welcome you, tell you about the village wines and those of the Languedoc.
It is also the starting point for Christa's guided tours which are a mixture of anecdotes of the heritage and gastronomy of this superb village, and end with a tasting of organic wines at the wine store. Book a ticket for this must-see at the Tourist Office!
This original concept has been available in Peyriac-de-Mer for several (even-numbered) years. Come and try the five senses walk, a gastronomic stroll through the vineyards in spring. In odd numbered years, discover the village from an artistic point of view with Peyri'art at the beginning of the summer.

Before the Romans arrived, Peyriac-de-Mer was a small Iron Age port called Oppidum du Moulin. The remains are on display in the archaeological museum in the centre of the village with prehistoric and ancient collections.
